Biography
Born in 1953 in South Africa’s Transvaal region, Mchunu rose to prominence in the mid-1970s and early 1980s as a leading singer in the boisterous Zulu jive idiom that subsequently developed into mbaqanga. His group embodied the style’s core appeal through propulsive grooves, an instrumental lineup of guitar, violin and concertinas, and forceful vocals steeped in blues. He has issued multiple albums that achieved robust sales across South Africa, yet none succeeded in establishing any enduring international profile.
