Mothers of Gut, an outfit rooted in Los Angeles, delivers an expansive, intellectually charged fusion of psychedelia and Krautrock-influenced experimental rock. Fronted by singer and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Freeman, the ensemble came together in 2007 and relied on a shifting cast of players until its roster locked in during 2010 around guitarist William Davies (Duhkha), keyboardist/effects manipulator Kristina Collantes, bassist Ryan Bergman (Duhkha), and drummer Dave Gasper (Narwhal Party). Written and tracked in 2009 before emerging the next spring, Inanimate Sermon marked the band’s first full-length statement. Freeman’s father died of cancer in 2010, and the intense feelings that followed prompted the group’s next project, Unking, which surfaced on Family Time in spring 2011.
