Cesar Alexandre, born in Rio de Janeiro, operated Mount Shrine as one of multiple creative aliases in the dark ambient realm. Several digital-only albums appeared under his own name before 2018, when Winter Restlessness arrived as his first release on Cryo Chamber and marked a decisive breakthrough.

Akira Yamaoka’s scores for the Silent Hill games and film shaped Alexandre’s approach; beginning in the mid-2010s, he tracked material in his bedroom, issuing work first as Mount Hibiki, then Kagutaba, and finally Mount Shrine. The output was abundant, consisting of immersive drone pieces layered with field recordings and faint radio voices. A demo reached the niche Cryo Chamber imprint, which signed him and issued Winter Restlessness that same year. Label head Simon Heath, known for Atrium Carceri, co-produced and mastered the record, imparting a warm, enveloping tone that diverged from the label’s characteristically austere aesthetic.

Further Cryo Chamber titles followed, among them Ghosts on Broken Pavement in 2019 and Shortwave Ruins in 2020. Alexandre passed away on April 15, 2021, after complications from COVID-19.
