Mourning Phase

Details on Mourning Phase stay almost nonexistent, even though the act issued an exceptionally scarce, privately pressed British folk-rock album under its own name in 1971. Audibly, the project appears to have been the work of a male-female duo whose sessions relied mainly on a lone electric guitar paired with an acoustic instrument. Although the production may strike many listeners as minimal, the album remains a finely crafted and unusually haunting collection whose appeal rests on sturdy minor-key folk melodies, the duo’s intimate vocal harmonies, and lyrics whose unusually sharp, combative tone evokes stormy romantic exchanges. A CD version surfaced in the mid-1990s, yet the pressing was so small that this edition, too, soon became difficult to find.
