Caila Thompson-Hannant, a Montreal-based musician and performer, emerged from the same rich artistic milieu that fostered like-minded talents including Grimes, Majical Cloudz, and Sean Nicholas Savage. She contributed to multiple groups such as Miracle Fortress, Shapes and Sizes, and Think About Life before launching a solo project in 2011 under the name Mozart's Sister. Months of refining a handful of initial tracks led to the 2013 debut EP Hello. Its tracks blended jagged synth-pop structures, towering electronic rhythms, and Thompson-Hannant's polished vocals while pulling simultaneously from 1980s commercial radio fare and the work of more avant-garde peers. Hello attracted widespread notice, prompting Mozart's Sister to join Asthmatic Kitty for the 2014 full-length debut Being. She then shifted to Arbutus Records for the successor album Field of Love, which arrived in 2017 and intensified its skewed electropop direction.
