Biography
Salvador Pedro Maiaze, better known as the award-winning Mozambican artist and producer Mr. Bow, rose to prominence during the 2010s by cultivating a buoyant genre he calls “jango music,” a blend anchored in Afro-beat, R&B, zouk, and marrabenta. Raised in Gaza province after his birth as Salvador Pedro Maiaze, he first appeared in the fleeting hip-hop collective Strange Face before joining forces in 2007 with fellow Mozambican vocalists and beat-makers Oliver Styles and Ta Basilly. That partnership helped shape the light, airborne Afro-beat aesthetic that would become his signature.
His first solo outing, Meu Sonho, surfaced in 2008 and spotlighted the popular tracks “Txova-Xitaduma” and “Anaha-Gwente,” while the follow-up album Kota de Familia arrived in 2010. Sina de Victoria, released in 2012, brought Mr. Bow a Mozambique music award for the single “Nitati-Dhaya,” and his fourth studio effort, 2016’s The King of Mozambique, delivered multiple chart successes such as “Vida Boa” and “My Number One.” Closing the decade, he scored further successes with “Hiwena” in 2018, “Tsovani Minengue” in 2019, and “Xikwembu Rhivalela” in 2020. Beyond his own recordings and live work, Mr. Bow established the independent imprint Bawito Music.
