Biography
Josh Miesmer acquired his initial blues guitar skills under Dave Rubin, the widely recognized instructor, writer of method books, contributor to Guitar Player magazine, and onetime senior editor at Guitar One magazine. During his high school years he applied those skills as a member of the ska/dub outfit the Crumb Tynees, after which he enrolled at Bennington College to pursue jazz guitar studies. While attending the college he also began composing and gigging with a jazz ensemble of his own. Upon returning to New York City he abandoned jazz, switched to bass, and performed in several rock outfits—Duckwood, Peck Slip, and Chris Max—as well as the Afro-beat group Synopsis. He subsequently launched his own projects, first with the band Downie and the Ferns and later under the solo alias Mr. Forky. Miesmer then reached out to Kenny Siegal, frontman of Johnny Society, an acquaintance from the period when both Duckwood and Siegal’s earliest band Hunk had been signed to the same Polygram publishing roster, and asked him to helm production on a debut album. Fang Records issued the resulting Mr. Forky in summer 2002, after which Miesmer joined Johnny Society on tour.
