Emerging from the partnership of Chelsea Wolfe and Jess Gowrie, Mrs. Piss delivers a menacing, forceful sound drawing from metal's heavy, ominous rumble, goth's dark introspection, industrial's relentless drive, and indie rock's clever sonic edge. Formed during Gowrie's time as a touring member of Wolfe's live ensemble, the act launched itself via a self-titled EP in 2020 comprising eight tracks that balanced sharp intellect and uncompromising edge with raw force.

This marked another chapter in their shared history rather than an initial meeting. Gowrie had already lent her skills to the making of Wolfe's debut full-length, Mistake in Parting from 2006, and the pair had joined forces briefly in Red Host, issuing the EP Unclean back in 2008. Once that outfit dissolved, Wolfe pursued her individual path while Gowrie lent her drumming to multiple endeavors, among them Horseneck, a California-based stoner rock group known for its sludgy style. Wolfe brought Gowrie back into the fold in 2017 for drum duties on the Hiss Spin album recordings, after which she joined the accompanying tour. Amid travels and breaks from preparing Wolfe's 2019 effort Birth of Violence — another project that included Gowrie — the longtime associates traded creative notions, crafting material that blended Wolfe's melodic approach with the power and punch of Gowrie's playing. Handling guitars and vocals themselves while Gowrie also managed drums, bass, guitar, and programming, they captured these ideas as Mrs. Piss and unveiled the resulting eight-song, 19-minute self-titled EP in May 2020, a work both forceful and evocative.
