MU330, the self-described "psycho-ska" outfit, took its name from the section number of the high school jazz class where several original members first crossed paths and assembled the group in St. Louis, MO, in 1988. The founding lineup featured vocalist/guitarist Dan Potthast, vocalist/trumpeter John Skavanaugh, bassist Chris Diebold, saxophonist Matt Knobbe, keyboardist Matt Struckel, and drummer Ted Moll. Personnel rotated often, so that keyboardist Struckel had already departed by the time the debut Press reached stores on Asian Man Records in 1994. Skavanaugh and Knobbe soon followed him out, clearing space for vocalist Jason Nelson, trumpeter Nick Baur, and saxophonist Traygen Bilsland to contribute to the 1996 album Chumps on Parade before those three likewise moved on. The remaining core of Potthast, Diebold, and Moll recruited trombonists Rob Bell and Gerry Lundquist in time to track the third release, Crab Rangoon, in 1997. Winter Wonderland arrived two years afterward. Live Oh Yeah! surfaced in spring 2001, with Ultra Panic following one year later.
