Formed during 1970 in Gainesville, Florida, Mudcrutch served as the immediate forerunner to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Its original lineup placed a 17-year-old Tom Petty on bass, Mike Campbell and Tom Leadon—the brother of former Eagle Bernie Leadon—on guitars, Benmont Tench on keyboards, and Randall Marsh behind the drums. The group built a following across Florida’s bar scene before shifting operations to Los Angeles in 1974. There Leon Russell and Denny Cordell’s Shelter Records offered the band a deal, yet Mudcrutch dissolved before substantial tracks were cut, leaving only Petty tied to the label as a solo act. Over time the musicians gradually reassembled, now featuring Petty and Campbell on guitars, Tench on keyboards, Ron Blair on bass, and Stan Lynch on drums. Adopting the name Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, they transferred Petty’s existing Shelter contract and issued the self-titled Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album in 1976, after which their trajectory became widely known. During summer 2007, Petty, Campbell, Tench, Leadon, and Marsh regrouped under the Mudcrutch banner and cut a self-titled album issued the following year on Reprise Records; a brief tour supported the release. Also in 2008 the band put out the EP Mudcrutch Extended Play Live, which captured four live performances. The musicians reconvened once more in 2015 to record a second album, released as 2 in May 2016. Tom Petty’s death on October 2, 2017, halted further activity. Guitarist Tom Leadon passed away on March 22, 2023, at the age of 70.
