Since the mid-1990s, Multicast has relied on a stronghold of electronic instruments and guitars to shape an exotic, sun-kissed version of downtempo IDM. Guitar lines echo surf rock together with spaghetti Western motifs, while the open electronic rhythms maintain a calm, vacation-inflected mood. Dave Alexander, Jeff Holland, and Nathan Jantz assembled the group in Colorado. After sending out demo CD-Rs during 1995 and 1996, the three launched Obliq Recordings because most electronic imprints then concentrated solely on dance releases. The label delivered its opening compilation in 1998; Multicast began issuing EPs the next year, and the debut album Rural Sessions arrived in 2001. Obliq Recordings also documented the members’ side and solo work. K2 O Records, based in Germany, released Further Obliq Perspectives—a collection of tracks drawn from the Obliq catalog—in 2002. Multicast’s second album, Bahian Coastal Highway, appeared on vinyl in 2005, followed by Spirituality Thru Technology in 2008. Jantz eventually stepped away from the band yet continued contributing to the label. The group later placed its full catalog, along with unreleased recordings, online, and Carpe Sonum Records brought Bahian Coastal Highway out on CD in 2016.
