Biography
Maimouna Youssef, a Baltimore-based singer/songwriter also known as Mumu Fresh, weaves R&B, soul, blues, and rap into her recordings. Although born in Baltimore, she relocated to Philadelphia at age ten and completed her studies at the Duke Ellington School of Arts in 2002. A brief enrollment at the New York Film Academy preceded her return to Baltimore to stay with her aunt. Her vocals on the Roots’ “Don’t Feel Right” in 2007 earned a Grammy nomination and opened the door to her own releases. In 2011 she issued her debut EP Black Magic Woman alongside her first album The Blooming. Four years later she returned with Vintage Babies, featuring guest appearances from Common, Irvin Washington, and Malik Yusef. After another four-year interval she delivered her third album, 2021’s Queen of Culture.
