The origins of Must trace back to Australian-born Dave Ireland’s relocation to London, where he crossed paths with the itinerant drummer Reuben Alexander. Ireland persuaded Alexander to join him for a single club engagement, an evening that stretched into a three-day celebration concluding with the pair improvising together. After holding auditions for numerous bassists, they settled on German transplant Kai Lemke to complete the lineup. The trio performed regularly throughout London, drawing strong responses from rock enthusiasts even as the city’s prevailing dance culture frequently eclipsed their visibility. Their debut wide release, 2002’s Androgynous Jesus, also marked the first occasion on which they could share their music beyond Britain.
