Mutoid Man formed as an American metalcore trio in New York during 2012, drawing from hardcore punk, rock and roll, intricate progressive metal, and neo-psych textures. The lineup unites musicians from Cave In, Converge, and High On Fire, and the group has released three widely praised full-length albums since its inception: Bleeder in 2015, War Moans in 2017, and Mutants in 2023.

Stephen Brodsky, guitarist and vocalist from Cave In, and Ben Koller, drummer from Converge, established the band in Brooklyn after previously collaborating on each other’s projects. They enlisted Nick Cageao, the sound engineer at Brooklyn’s notorious St. Vitus club, on bass for the debut EP Helium Head, which Magic Bullet issued in 2013. Sargent House signed the band in 2014, leading to the recording of its first album, Bleeder. When the LP appeared the next year, the outsider power trio fused disparate strains of extreme music into a single sound.

In 2017 the group delivered its second album, War Moans, which maintained a comparable intensity and included guest contributions from Chelsea Wolfe, Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, and Converge guitarist and producer extraordinaire Kurt Ballou. After Cageao departed in 2021, High On Fire bass player Jeff Matz joined the lineup and made his first recorded appearance on the raw, adrenalized Mutants, released in 2023.
