Mutual Benefit serves as the collaborative outlet for vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Lee, fusing folk, psychedelic pop, and experimental recording methods to shape delicate, optimistic songs that recall Sufjan Stevens, the Microphones, and the Antlers. The project issued its first full-length album, Love's Crushing Diamond, in 2013, where it remained on Billboard's Heatseekers chart for three weeks. Later efforts such as Skip a Sinking Stone in 2016 and Thunder Follows the Light in 2018 extended Lee's serene chamber pop aesthetic. After reinterpreting Vashti Bunyan's Just Another Diamond Day in 2019, Mutual Benefit resurfaced with the pensive Growing at the Edges in 2023.

Raised in Columbus, Ohio, Lee started composing songs while still in high school under the influence of Elliott Smith and similar artists. Following graduation he relocated to Texas, steering his work toward greater experimentation through the addition of field recordings and found sounds. He first adopted the Mutual Benefit name for writing and recording while based in Austin, yet the project gathered traction only after his move to Boston. The initial release, 2009's Figure in Black, introduced the D.I.Y. approach that defined most early output. A productive stretch between 2010 and 2011 yielded several digital EPs: Drifting, Spider Heaven, I Saw the Sea, and The Cowboy's Prayer. Lee subsequently gathered years of material captured in Austin, Boston, and St. Louis, Missouri, to assemble the debut album Love's Crushing Diamond. This compassionate collection, shaped by the difficulties confronting his friends, appeared in limited form in October 2013 through Brooklyn micro-label Soft Eyes. Among its contributors were singer Julie Byrne and violinist Jake Falby. A wider edition arrived at year's end via Other Music Recording Company, by which time the album had secured indie recognition, a Billboard Heatseekers chart placement, and critical praise. A remastered physical version of The Cowboy's Prayer followed in 2014.

While touring in support of the debut, Lee began developing songs for the next album, completing both writing and recording after settling in New York City. Skip a Sinking Stone appeared on Mom + Pop Music in May 2016 and traced a comparable sonic path to the first release. Recorded in Brooklyn and Boston, Thunder Follows the Light surfaced on the Transgressive label in 2018, merging tranquil, pseudo-orchestral indie pop with explorations of hope, struggle, unity, and the environment. Alongside returning figures such as violinist Jake Falby and guitarist Mike Clifford, the album introduced vocalist Johanne Swanson (Yohuna), saxophonist Gabriel Birnbaum (Wilder Maker), and drummer Felix Walworth (Told Slant).

After issuing a full-album cover of British folksinger Vashti Bunyan's 1970 classic Just Another Diamond Day in 2019, Lee stayed silent until mid-2023, when two Mutual Benefit singles preceded the release of the wistful Growing at the Edges. Issued on Transgressive that October, the album marked Lee's first collaboration with co-producer Birnbaum and incorporated string arrangements by Concetta Abate. Its gentle country- and jazz-inflected chamber folk featured Birnbaum and Abate, drummer Sean Mullins (Wilder Maker, Katie von Schleicher), bassist Nick Jost (Wilder Maker, Baroness), guitarist Jonnie Baker (Florist), and prior associates including singer Eva Louise Goodman (Nighttime) and flutist Noah Klein.
