My Crazy Girlfriend emerged when twin brothers Bennett "Laze" Armstrong and Justyn "Royal" Armstrong pooled their production talents, delivering a sound reminiscent of a next-generation Black Eyed Peas that fused pop and hip-hop while seizing control of the dance charts. Already seasoned from collaborations with Bruno Mars and Kesha and from their own tenure as the duo 2XL, the brothers launched the new project in 2012. Myah Marie, a 2XL associate who had sung backup for Britney Spears, and singer/rapper Cosmo completed the lineup; the four promptly shared an apartment situated directly across from the Capitol Records building. The location paid off when Capitol signed them in 2013 and issued their debut single, "Go F**k Yourself," late that year. Built on slick and squeaky clean beats capped by an F-bomb-dropping chorus, the track ascended to the summit of Billboard's Dance Charts in 2014, the same year the group unveiled the follow-up single "Crazy Stupid Love."
