The post-punk trio My Disco came together in Melbourne, Australia, during 2003 when brothers Liam and Ben Andrews linked up with Rohan Rebeiro. Taking its name from a Big Black track, the group focused on angular, cerebral indie rock. Extensive roadwork helped establish their profile until Liam Andrews received a Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in 2004, forcing a temporary slowdown. The members kept performing by slotting gigs and rehearsals around his chemotherapy sessions, and during that period they honed a leaner, sharper approach that echoed the metallic punch of Shellac. Their debut album, Cancer, arrived in 2006.

The following year the band crossed the globe to track new material with Steve Albini inside Chicago’s Electrical Audio. Paradise appeared in 2008 and marked a further departure from math-rock structures toward even starker minimalism. A world tour followed in 2009, and in 2010 they issued the brisk, dance-oriented single “Young.” That same year they returned to Electrical Audio to record with Albini once more, yet afterward opted for a different production route and handed the tapes to Silverchair producer Scott Horscroft. The resulting album, Little Joy, came out on Temporary Residence in early 2011. Another rhythm-driven single, “Wrapped Coast,” surfaced as a 12-inch in 2012 carrying remixes from Factory Floor and Justin Broadrick. For their fourth LP the trio remained in Melbourne and collaborated with producer and film composer Cornel Wilczek, tracking everything digitally; the finished record, Severe, was issued by Temporary Residence in 2015.
