Biography
Finland's My Fate emerged among the many acts surfacing from the Scandinavian metal underground during the opening years of the 2000s. Their style of alternative metal, laced with components of death metal/black metal, thrash metal and hardcore, thrives on sharp contrasts. The group can shift into melodic passages that carry a dark, haunting quality, yet moments later the Finnish unit unleashes punishing sonic barrages that overwhelm the listener. A melodic stretch is frequently followed by an abrupt shift into dense, ferocious and brutally harsh territory.
Lead singer Antti Ojanen suits this approach through his command of both measured and unhinged delivery. Certain vocal lines remain clean and conventional, while others transition without hesitation into the demonic, guttural growling characteristic of death metal/black metal and grindcore. Like most Scandinavian metal acts, My Fate composes exclusively in English.
The band originated in Tampere, Finland in spring 2000 when three late-teen headbangers—guitarist Jaakko Jarvensivu (b. Sep. 12, 1981), bassist Roope Lehtinen (b. June 17, 1980) and drummer Vilho Rajala (b. Nov. 18, 1981)—joined forces. Rajala and Lehtinen had previously played in Wompuco, an obscure Finnish metal outfit formed in 1997 that disbanded in early 2000 shortly before My Fate's inception. Two musicians Rajala and Lehtinen had known from that earlier group, guitarists Janne Kykkänen and Risto Katajisto, later performed together in Superstar Suckers.
Ojanen (b. May 10, 1981) joined as lead singer in August 2000, and the lineup reached quintet status with the addition of second guitarist Mikko Lehtinen (b. Dec. 12, 1982) in November 2000. Jarvensivu occasionally contributes keyboards, though his primary role remains guitarist. My Fate's debut release was the EP Bloodstains, followed in 2001 by the second EP Sinking. Their first full-length album, Happiness Is Fiction, was tracked in 2002 and issued in Finland by the Firebox label in 2003 before receiving U.S. distribution through Phoenix, AZ-based Crash Music in 2004.
