Biography
My Gold Mask, the Chicago outfit blending goth pop's theatrical sweep with garage rock's raw propulsion, centers on vocalist and percussionist Gretta Rochelle together with guitarist Jack Armondo. Born in Louisiana, Rochelle draws from Hindi films and riot grrrl, and she encountered Brooklyn-born, Los Angeles-raised Armondo at a gathering; the pair launched the project in 2008. Once Rochelle mastered drumming, they started crafting material that wove her reference points together with Armondo's affinity for surf rock and synth pop. Their self-titled debut album appeared in 2009, followed in 2010 by the EPs A Thousand Voices and A Million Miles (From Where We Were Last). Adding drummer James Andrew turned the duo into a trio, freeing Rochelle to emphasize vocals while introducing further electronic textures to the group's sound. Leave Me Midnight, the band's second album, surfaced in early 2013.
