Biography
In 1991, Melvin Baxter, Tevlin Williamson and Marlon Davis performed as an a cappella trio at venues near their Rock Hill, SC base. The next year they encountered Al Boyd and Donnie Mayes, leading to the creation of N-Phase. Once the urban-soul vocal group gained traction locally, the members recorded several demo tapes for industry circulation. Airplay of “Ooh Yeah!” on Washington, D.C.’s WPGC generated enough attention to attract Maverick Records, which promptly signed the act. Assisted in the studio by R. Kelly, N-Phase issued its debut album in 1994.
