Naam came together in Brooklyn during 2009, pulling sonic ideas from numerous psychedelic and atmospheric groups to shape a dense, weighty style. The founding lineup consisted of vocalist and guitarist Ryan Lee Lugar, bassist John Preston Bundy, and drummer Eli Pizzuto. Following the independent release of their 2009 EP Kingdom, the three-piece secured a contract with Teepee Records and issued their self-titled debut album that autumn. Extensive road work followed, beginning domestically before moving abroad, where they backed kindred acts and secured an appearance at Roadburn Festival. Over subsequent years the band put out a limited-edition 7-inch single covering Nirvana material alongside the Starchild EP in 2011. Keyboardist John "Fingers" Weingarten came aboard in 2012, broadening the arrangements through swirling, sustained organ textures and additional keys. Their second album, Vow, appeared in 2013 while Naam maintained a near-constant touring pace.
