After 14 years performing conventional Klezmer repertoire throughout greater Boston, the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra launched Naftule's Dream to channel more exploratory improvisations and original works. The ensemble sustained its development by issuing two self-released albums: Search for the Golden Dreydl in 1997 and Smash, Clap in 1998. The Boston Phoenix characterized Naftule's Dream as a "sophisticated little big band," while the Boston Globe highlighted the group's blend of "Klezmer music, Phish-like improvisation, and radical Yiddish poetry."

Newton, MA-born clarinetist Glenn Dickson conceived both Naftule's Dream and the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra. Initially a conventional classical performer, he entered the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and was guided toward improvisation by free-jazz saxophonist and faculty member Joe Maneri, with whom he started a band in 1981. He soon established the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra alongside fellow conservatory students. Naftule's Dream, which takes its name from early-20th-century klezmer musician Naftule Brandwein, is completed by trombonist David Harris, pianist Michael McLaughlin, electric guitarist Pete Fitzpatrick, tuba player James Grey, and drummer Eric Rosenthal.
