Biography
Nana Ampadu from Ghana established the African Brothers Band in 1963, joining the wave of guitar-driven highlife ensembles that emerged across the country during that decade. The ensemble distinguished itself by restricting its repertoire exclusively to original material rather than relying on renditions of existing works, while embedding political commentary in every composition. Throughout the 1970s the group stood out for its inventive approach, drawing on rumba and reggae while developing Afro-hili, a style intended to unify diverse African musical traditions and positioned as a rival to Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat. In later years the band reverted to a stricter guitar highlife sound, its hundreds of recordings—most of them issued in Ghana—serving as evidence of sustained activity and inventive output.
