Nancey Jackson emerged among the vocalists of the 1990s who navigated the boundary separating gospel from soul, a path eased by Kirk Franklin’s breakthrough achievements. Her own breakthrough arrived via the house-inflected energy of the 1997 single “Free (Yes I’m Free).” Vocally reminiscent of both Loleatta Holloway and Tramaine Hawkins, she made her recording debut on Savoy in 1991. Additional work as a backing vocalist occupied her through the middle of the decade, after which she joined the roster of Harmony Records. The follow-up full-length, bearing the same title Free (Yes I’m Free), appeared toward the end of 1997, with Relationships arriving two years afterward.
