The synth-pop outfit NASA stood poised to break through to listeners across the United States before unforeseen circumstances derailed their momentum. Formed by Patrik Henzel, who handled vocals and noises, alongside Martin Thors, also contributing vocals and noises, the duo made their initial mark in 1983 by contributing a track to a Swedish motion picture. Their debut single, "Paula," arrived in 1985 and climbed into the Swedish Top Ten. Following that breakthrough, they completed the album Power of the Century and issued several additional charting singles. Columbia Records brought the group to America in 1987 for the purpose of cutting a new record. Producer Robert Margouleff was enlisted for the project, yet the label pushed for a name alteration in light of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. After the executive responsible for signing NASA departed Columbia, his replacement showed no enthusiasm for the act. Despite completing the album, Columbia ultimately declined to release it. Under the moniker Henzel & Thors, the pair issued an album in Sweden during 1989 that failed to achieve commercial success. By the late 1990s, Memento Materia, a Swedish imprint, approached NASA about assembling a collection of their popular tracks from the eighties. Upon the label's request for fresh material, the duo opted to produce an entire new album instead. Remembering the Future marked their return to recording after more than ten years when it appeared in 1999, with Ninthwave Records securing the rights for an American edition in 2000.
