Nathan Kawanishi works as a producer, beatmaker, and multi-instrumentalist, shaping detail-oriented lo-fi hip-hop that fuses intricate musicality with expansive atmospheric textures. Even as he developed material for a full studio album, he issued multiple volumes of ambient instrumentals, among them the 2020 set Throwaway Beats for a Throwaway Year, Vol. 1.

Before turning to his own instrumental work, Kawanishi trained on koto and filled assorted roles in projects by friends. While dividing his schedule between Washington and Tokyo, he drew influence from the forward-thinking production of Mac Miller and Earl Sweatshirt as well as ambient pioneers like Brian Eno. Starting around 2019, he issued music under his own name, threading those sources together with strands of traditional Japanese music. Within a short time, dozens of his tracks had drawn millions of streams, among them the 2019 collection Freshman Tape and the 2020 collection Lush Loops. He placed Throwaway Beats for a Throwaway Year, Vol. 1 into circulation in 2020 while still shaping a more cohesive album of his mellow, lightly nostalgic instrumentals.
