Biography
Nathaniel Mayer earned lasting recognition through “Village of Love,” a 1962 single issued by Fortune Records, the modest Detroit independent operated by Jack and Devora Brown. At the time Mayer was just eighteen, yet the performance delivered a seasoned, gravel-edged vocal that contrasted with the Fabulous Twilights’ explosive, unpolished garage-soul accompaniment, turning the track into an enduring hidden gem. Born in Detroit, Mayer also cut two other notable sides—“I Want Love and Affection (Not the House of Correction)” and “I Don’t Want No Bald-Headed Woman Telling Me What to Do,” the latter appearing on Norton Records. His reputation rested equally on an unrestrained, high-energy stage presence that kept him a devoted cult favorite across four decades, interrupted now and then by fresh releases such as the 1980 album Raise the Curtain High on Love Dog Records. In 2004 he entered a recording agreement with Fat Possum Records and began performing alongside the Shanks, a group directed by former Detroit Cobra Jeff Meier. Fat Possum issued I Just Want to Be Held that October, followed three years later by Why Don’t You Give It to Me? on Alive. After suffering multiple strokes in April 2008, Mayer entered a Detroit nursing home and passed away there on November 1. Alive Natural Sound brought out the posthumous collection Why Won’t You Let Me Be Black? in 2009.
