Tenor saxophonist Ned Goold maintains his strongest public association with Harry Connick, Jr.'s ensemble, yet additional performances have linked him to Ben Wolfe, Brother Jack McDuff, and Tabou Combo. Goold launched his career in the early 1980s by taking on session saxophone work, scheduling paid nighttime appearances around daytime hours devoted to refining his technique. Recognition of his solo improvisation abilities reached a level by 1990 that prompted Harry Connick, Jr. to bring him into the band, after which an engagement with Connick's bassist Ben Wolfe materialized soon afterward. Alongside contributions to Connick's recordings and the showcase album Jazz Underground: Live At Smalls, Goold has issued two solo albums, 1998's Gooold and Entropy the following year.
