Nefertiti issued just one solo project, the 1993 album L.I.F.E. (Living in Fear of Extinction), which earned stronger critical notices than actual sales. Beats from Guru and DJ Pooh, together with contributions by King Tee, DJ Premier, and MC Lyte, still could not propel the record forward. Her embrace of Islamic principles originated with her parents, both of whom held positions under Nation of Islam founder Elijah Muhammad. Chicago-born and later based in Los Angeles, she also devoted time to political causes, supporting Jim Brown’s Amer-I-Can program and speaking often in her local area.
