Born Christopher Tidmarsh on 14 February 1943 in Hoxton, East London, England, the artist known as Christian formed one of Britain’s earliest breakthrough acts alongside his backing band the Crusaders during the years immediately preceding the Beatles’ arrival. Guitarist Jimmy Page belonged to the group’s original roster and later appeared as a session musician on the singer’s 1964 single ‘Honey Hush’. Albert Lee, Mick Abrahams and Alex Dmochowski, who subsequently joined Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, each performed with the Crusaders at different stages, while Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Elmer Twitch (piano), Bibi Blange (bass) and Tornado Evans (drums) accompanied Christian on the tour supporting ‘That’s Nice’. The buoyant 1966 release climbed to the UK Top 20, yet its stylistic counterpart ‘Oops’ failed to chart, leading the singer to settle in Germany, where he already enjoyed an ardent following. Returning to Britain, Christian continued issuing records on an irregular basis, but without achieving steady commercial momentum he eventually withdrew from live performance.
