Biography
Nelson Faria ranks among the leading guitarists of his era and has recorded and performed alongside many of Brazil’s most prominent musicians, including Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Cássia Eller, Nana Caymmi, Zélia Duncan, João Bosco, Wagner Tiso, and Toninho Horta. He collaborated with Leila Pinheiro for the production Na Ponta da Língua, joined Paulo Moura’s septet for Rapsody in Bossa, and appeared with Baby Do Brasil on Acústico. His debut solo album, Ioiô, appeared on Perfil Musical in 1993. Alongside José Namen, Marcos Suzano, and Bororó he contributed to the recording Beatles, Um Tributo Brasileiro, while additional projects include Janelas Abertas with Carol Saboya and Três/Three with Nico Assumpção and Lincoln Chieb. Together with Nico Assumpção, Carlos Malta, and Lincoln Cheib he formed the ensemble Ninho de Vespas. Faria spent a year at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, California, studying with Joe Diorio, Joe Pass, Scott Henderson, and Frank Gambale, and he also completed courses in contemporary harmony and guitar technique under Ted Greene. He has conducted music workshops across Brazil and the United States, produced the first videoclass made in Brazil for Giannini Instruments under the title Toque de Mestre, and created the video Ginga Brasileira with Antônio Adolfo, later issued internationally as Secrets of Brazilian Music. His published works comprise the instructional volumes A Arte da Improvisação from Lumiar Editora and The Brazilian Guitar Book from Sher Music Co.
