In southern Alabama, steel guitarist Hubert Nelson joined forces with guitarist James D. Touchstone to create the folk ensemble Nelstone's Hawaiians, which cut sides for Victor throughout the late 1920s. Many of those sessions spotlighted the Hawaiian approach to steel-guitar technique, a manner of playing that spread widely during the decade after Hawaii entered the Republic. Beyond these details, scant information survives about Nelstone's Hawaiians, save for the placement of their recording "Fatal Flower Garden" on Harry Smith's 1952 anthology Anthology of American Folk Music.
