Nena Guzman ranks among the leading voices in the alternative and progressive corrido scene. Born Daniela Resendiz Guzman, she spent her formative years in Tijuana, where she performed regularly at neighborhood parties and community events long before she viewed singing as a viable profession. Only toward the close of her high-school years did she begin to treat music as a serious pursuit.

Following graduation she committed herself fully to the craft, uploading clips to YouTube that quickly attracted attention across Mexico and throughout Southern California. Although she has repeatedly cited Jenni Rivera as a formative influence and continues to honor the late singer, Guzman’s own ambitions centered on the male-dominated alternative corrido movement then gaining momentum.

Luis del Villar, president of Del Records, took notice of the emerging talent, offered her a contract, and steered her toward the raw, aggressive “Enfermidad Massiva” strain of the genre. At the time, the charts were led by figures such as Gerardo Ortiz, Grupo Escolta, Regulo Caro, and Jorge Santa Cruz.

Her first full-length release, Te Declaro la Guerra, blended narcocorridos with rancheras and romantic ballads and proved successful throughout Mexico. After more than a year of touring, repeated television spots, and several YouTube video singles, Guzman returned to the studio to record La Iniciativa. The 2014 album presented alternative corridos alongside rancheras and romantic material, this time realized with a noticeably refined production aesthetic. Upon its March release, the project climbed into the Top 20 of Billboard’s Mexican Regional Albums chart.
