The immersive electronic duo Neuland emerged from the partnership of two ex-Tangerine Dream musicians who kept elements of their former group's signature synth-driven approach while venturing into updated sonic directions. Decades of planning and preparation eventually produced their expansive self-titled double album, issued toward the close of 2019.

The concept for Neuland originated as an electronic project uniting Peter Baumann, a Tangerine Dream founder, with Paul Haslinger, who performed in the group from 1985 to 1990. Both artists shared deep experience with rich synth textures and atmospheric electronics that conveyed film-like suspense. Their earliest joint effort along these lines, the similarly atmospheric Blue Room, dates to 1992; though the recordings remained unreleased, the pair maintained an ongoing friendship and continued exchanging ideas while ambient styles evolved over subsequent years. From 2018 onward they convened repeated recording sessions across multiple West Coast locations to develop the dark, atmospheric, and frequently sparse pieces that formed the basis of the Neuland album. The ambitious double set appeared in November 2019, with the artists also scheduling concert dates to mark its arrival.
