Jihae Simmons Meek first encountered her future spouse and Neverever collaborator, Wallace Meek of Bricolage, while fronting the Glasgow-based indie pop outfit the Royal We. After that group dissolved in 2007, the pair relocated to her native Los Angeles, CA, and joined forces with Devon Williams and Mickey LaFranchi to launch another indie pop endeavor. They began under the name Champagne Socialists, whose initial material fused a gritty, sun-blanched blend of the Royal We and Bricolage. Slumberland Records issued their opening single, Blue Genes, in summer 2009, after which the Champagne Socialists adopted the moniker Neverever. Personnel adjustments followed when Devon Williams exited to focus on solo work, prompting the addition of Jackson Baugh and Jessica Espeleta. Slumberland put out the band’s debut full-length, Angelic Swells, in May 2010. Early 2012 brought a five-track EP called Shake-a-Baby whose slower paces and pervasive tone of heartbreak or anger signaled a modest shift in approach.
