Biography
A casual gathering of like-minded coffee shop dwellers in Portland, OR, grew into one of the Rose City’s most enduring forces in indie rock. David French, Luke Hollywood, Christine Denkwelter, Matthew Hattie Hein, and Mattiey Gaunt came together in 1992 for a single opening slot supporting Sebadoh. They soon issued the full-length Freewheel! on the local indie imprint Candy Ass Records, coalescing as a distinctive songwriting collective whose varied influences merged into a lo-fi, occasionally abrasive post-punk aesthetic. Society appeared next on Lissy's U.K. in 1994, after which the group gradually shifted toward a slop-pop approach. NBD put out Ennui Go in 1997 and said goodbye to singer Hein, who exited to launch a solo career. The alternate-takes collection C-sides surfaced in 1999. French eventually left to join Wallpaper.
