Biography
Originating in Toronto, the experimental no wave group New Fries embrace repetitive post-punk patterns alongside unrestrained challenges to musical norms, producing a style that always appears ready to fall apart. Their boundary-testing approach, built from colliding bass lines, vocals steeped in dub and delay, and abrasive electronics, reached fresh peaks of intensity and unease on the 2020 album Is the Idea of Us.
The quartet formed around 2013 with Anni Spadafora on guitar and vocals, Jenny Gitman on drums, Tim Fagan on bass, and Ryan Carley handling synths. Raw demos appeared quickly, though more than two years of work went into completing their 2016 debut Fresh Face Forward. After issuing several minor recordings and losing Carley, the band overhauled its process by exchanging instruments and songwriting duties, yielding the dark and cacophonous 2020 album Is the Idea of Us.
