Paganini, an Italian master on violin and guitar who also wrote chamber and orchestral works spotlighting both instruments, transformed violin performance with unprecedented demands on the player. His Concerto No. 1 in D, for example, conveys the astonishing command he commanded. At the same time he cultivated and was enveloped by rumors of romantic entanglements within Napoleon’s court, an early rescue by an unidentified older patroness who shielded him during his teenage years from ruinous drinking spurred by sudden celebrity, and a supposed infernal bargain that endowed him with superhuman instrumental powers, among other persistent tales.
