Biography
New Zealand-born musician Ruby Kerkhofs, now based in Melbourne, Australia, records as Nice Girl and crafts dance and electronic grooves that deliver straightforward, lighthearted enjoyment on the dancefloor. Her sound merges house, techno, and synth pop, beginning with a first EP that surfaced in 2019 on Houses in Motion. She later moved to Public Perception, which released the EPs Take a Step and Whistling Thorn in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic kept most touring off the calendar, yet New Zealand’s strong compliance with safety measures enabled live shows to return in 2021 far sooner than in most other countries, including a standout Boiler Room appearance that helped launch her debut album, Ipsum. Nice Girl followed with the 2022 EP Look at That Thing and, a year later, the album Upp, which featured multiple collaborations with fellow New Zealand musician Michael Kime. The eclectic Yummy arrived in 2024.
