Nick Mono crafts offhandedly tuneful tracks that weave together sounds spanning alternative rock, pop, and hip-hop while carrying a late-’90s slacker atmosphere. The Londoner first drew notice through the 2020 release of “Effy Stonem,” issued while he was still in his teens and after he had already put out initial EPs. That momentum led to a deal with Parlophone and the subsequent appearance of the 2022 EP The Sun Won’t Stay After Summer.
Born Nick Mannar in West London in 2002, he was inspired to start playing guitar after watching the Jackson 5 perform “I Want You Back” on The Ed Sullivan Show during childhood; Justin Bieber’s music supplied additional motivation. At age ten he posted several covers online, one of them Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” before committing to original work with the five-track EP Censor in 2019. The two-track set The Art of Social Distancing followed in April 2020 amid the pandemic’s outset. A month later came the single “Effy Stonem,” an impromptu homage to the Skins character that turned into his breakthrough and prompted Parlophone to sign him. Further singles arrived across 2021 and 2022—“Rusty,” “All That You Do,” “Anywhere in the World,” and “All the Money”—all included on the six-track collection The Sun Won’t Stay After Summer (2022).
