Biography
Nicki Parrott stands among Australia’s foremost jazz figures, her dusky timbre and fluid command of the double bass lending a romantic elegance to both standards and contemporary material. After relocating to New York City in 1994, she secured a prominent role as bassist in Les Paul’s ensemble during the guitarist’s long-running Iridium residency. Her debut as a leader arrived with the 2007 release Moon River, followed by further vocal-jazz collections such as Black Coffee in 2010 and Sentimental Journey in 2015. Additional sessions paired her with Rossano Sportiello, Ken Peplowski, and Chuck Redd, while dedicated tribute projects explored the repertoires of Blossom Dearie, the Carpenters, and Ella Fitzgerald. Although American popular standards remain central to her work, Parrott has continued to revisit songs from later decades on the 2021 album If You Could Read My Mind and its 2024 successor Feelin’ Groovy.
Born in Newcastle, New South Wales, in 1970, she displayed early aptitude by beginning piano lessons at age four. She later mastered both piano and flute; when her saxophonist sister Lisa needed a bassist for a jazz group, Nicki adopted the double bass and developed a lasting affinity for the instrument. At sixteen she received a scholarship to the Pan Pacific Music Camps, and after finishing secondary school she moved to Sydney to study at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. There she performed alongside leading local figures including Mike Nock, Paul Grabowski, and Dale Barlow, as well as visiting Americans Chuck Findley and Bobby Shew.
An Arts Council grant enabled her 1994 departure for New York, where she undertook further study with bassist Rufus Reid. In 2000 she joined Les Paul’s regular combo for the guitarist’s weekly Iridium appearances, forging a mentorship that extended to vocal encouragement as well as instrumental guidance. Her first recording, the 2001 collaborative project Awabakal Suite with sister Lisa, included the original composition “Come and Get It,” which had earned first prize in the Jazz Action Society’s 1992 song competition. Broadway pit work followed on productions such as Avenue Q, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and Jekyll & Hyde. In 2007 she and pianist Rossano Sportiello issued the duo album People Will Say We’re in Love, interpreting jazz numbers and classic pop standards.
Moon River marked the start of an extensive series of solo recordings in which Parrott delivered favorite standards through understated vocal delivery and refined jazz arrangements. Between 2008 and 2017 she completed seventeen albums for Venus Records while maintaining additional collaborations with Sportiello and maintaining a global schedule of club and festival appearances. The 2017 tribute Dear Blossom honored influential vocalist Blossom Dearie, and the following year saw the release of Stompin’ at the Savoy: A Tribute to Ella & Louis, recorded with trumpeter Byron Stripling. She also issued New York to Paris alongside saxophonist Harry Allen. Allen rejoined her for the 2021 collection If You Could Read My Mind, which blended material from multiple eras including “Jolene,” “We’ve Only Just Begun,” and “Lean on Me.” In 2024 Parrott returned with Feelin’ Groovy, an organ-centered set of 1960s songs featuring Jorge Ben’s “Mas Que Nada,” “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Harry Nilsson’s “Everybody’s Talkin’.”
