Biography
Nico stood out as one of the most intriguing personalities on the edges of rock music, mingling with, collaborating alongside, and forming romantic connections to a remarkable array of iconic performers from the 1960s. The irony in her trajectory lay in how she never achieved the same level of recognition as those around her, instead following a singular and resolute path in music that shunned commercial appeal yet earned respect and exerted lasting influence.
Her initial prominence came through work as a top model across Europe, which included a minor role in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita and the birth of her son with Alain Delon. During 1965, Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham took notice and offered her a recording opportunity on his Immediate imprint, but the single—boasting guitar contributions from Brian Jones and Jimmy Page—failed to make an impact.
She soon relocated to New York City, where Andy Warhol positioned her within the Velvet Underground as a marginal figure and sporadic vocalist. Though the group resisted viewing her as a full participant, she stayed until 1967, during which time her distinctive monotone delivery graced three tracks on their landmark debut from that year.
Venturing into solo work, Nico crafted songs with a folk-rock sensibility for her first album Chelsea Girl, drawing help from Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, and John Cale. A striking shift occurred with her 1969 release The Marble Index, which introduced her ominous, gothic image under Cale's production, highlighting her resonant voice, obscure songwriting, and eerie harmonium playing.
Throughout the 1970s, her records continued in this vein, benefiting from Cale's input as well as contributions by art rock innovators such as Eno and Phil Manzanera. Personal challenges mounted in the later 1970s and into the 1980s amid a severe substance dependency and complicated relationships, leading to scattered live releases across different companies. The poorly conceived Drama of Exile and the stronger Camera Obscura stood as her sole organized studio projects in that period, prior to her passing from a cerebral hemorrhage on Ibiza in 1988.
Regarded as the pioneering goth figure in rock, Nico's body of work presents challenging and somber listening that delineates an original, intensely potent artistic outlook, one that has gained greater sway over time. Having been close with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, the Velvet Underground, the Stones, Jim Morrison, Iggy Pop, and many more, her compelling narrative appears in Richard Witts's biography Nico: The Life & Lies of an Icon, issued in Great Britain by Virgin books, while James Young's The End offers a gritty account of her substance-plagued last years from the perspective of one who played in her band. ~ Richie Unterberger
