Biography
As part of the trio Eternal Summers, Nicole Yun helped shape dreamy shoegaze laced with indie rock textures. Her solo inclinations, however, gravitated more squarely toward mainstream ’90s alternative, a direction fully realized on her first album under her own name, Paper Suit, which appeared in 2019.
Following ten years spent touring, recording, and serving as Eternal Summers’ central creative force, Yun decided she required time away. She filled the interval with a string of temporary jobs, organizing house shows, and reflecting on where her life might head next. Watching peers launch conventional careers and adult routines, she briefly considered stepping away from music altogether. A sudden burst of creativity intervened, prompting her to begin composing material for a solo endeavor. She forwarded demos to producers Julian Fader of Ava Luna, based in New York, and Robert Garcia of Bleeding Rainbow, hoping to capture a full record.
During sessions in New York, Yun and Fader recruited several notable musicians: Doug Gillard of Guided by Voices and Duncan Lloyd of Maxïmo Park supplied lead guitar, former Cloud Nothings member Joe Boyer contributed keyboards, Jacob Sloan from the Pains of Being Pure at Heart played bass, and Fader handled drums. In Philadelphia, Garcia performed the bulk of the instrumental parts himself. The resulting sound reflected Yun’s longstanding affection for ’90s alternative, encompassing baggy indie dance, Brit-pop, and introspective singer/songwriter styles. She explicitly aimed to craft an album that evoked a “me-fronted Lemonheads.” Kanine Records released the finished eight-track collection, Paper Suit, in June 2019.
