Niecy Blues crafts meditative and atmospheric compositions that fuse R&B, ambient, gospel, and indie rock elements. Operating from South Carolina as a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, she relies on looped vocal improvisations and haunting delay to shape boundary-crossing pieces that register as devotional, ethereal, and intoxicating simultaneously. After several years of intermittent shorter releases and guest spots, she issued her first full-length work, the entrancing Exit Simulation, through Kranky in 2023.

Janise Robinson was raised in a religious household in Oklahoma, where she absorbed the hypnotic force of church music as a foundational influence. She later settled in Charleston, South Carolina, and spent time sharpening her abilities as a songwriter and performer. Recording as Niecy Blues, she shared occasional tracks online and contributed to other artists’ material. The downtempo R&B single “Ways,” produced by Contour, appeared in 2018, followed by the more atmospheric three-song EP CRY in 2020. She guested on Contour’s 2021 album Love Suite, and Mexican Summer released her lo-fi pop song “Bones Become the Trees” that November. After signing with Kranky, she delivered her debut album, Exit Simulation, in 2023. Additional production came from Contour, with appearances by KeiyaA and harpist Mary Lattimore.
