Night School, a California-based trio, fuses hazy low-fidelity guitar pop with the bright, nostalgic tones of 1960s girl groups, garage, and early doo-wop. Alexandra Morte and Baylie Arin launched the project in Oakland in 2013; the longtime friends first recorded as a duo, issuing their debut EP Heart Beat—a fuzzy set—through Georgia independent Graveface Records. Echoes of Cocteau Twins through the Shirelles shape a style that merges ethereal layers with unclouded, youthful warmth. Ahead of Heart Beat’s October 2014 release, the band issued the split EP Carousel alongside labelmates Dott and welcomed bassist Cheyenne Avant to solidify the lineup. Their first full-length, Blush, arrived in June 2016 and folded in 1990s fuzz-pop hues.
