Formed in 1992, the Swedish pop group the Nightman features three musicians: Pär Brumark handling vocals, Magnus Velgas on guitar, and Stry Kanarie also on guitar. A contract with the CNR Records label followed soon after their formation. Their look stood out immediately, with the members styling themselves as bit players drawn from 1960s B-movies and horror films. Brumark’s own presentation proved especially striking, as he routinely appeared in press photographs wearing a top hat and tails. Serving as the group’s chief songwriter, he arrived with an established track record that included work in France alongside Grammy award-winner Jean-Pierre Millars; together they scored a major hit with the song ‘Let Me Be Your No. 1’. Velgas had previously served as a session guitarist and engineer in London, Sydney, and Los Angeles, while Kanarie had earlier founded the Swedish cult bands Ebba Grön and Rymdimperiet. The band’s debut single, ‘News’, introduced their hybrid approach, merging pop and dance with pronounced rock guitar elements. Their album Divided Colours Of The Nightman, a title that puns on Benetton’s advertising, brought in multiple guest artists and remixers such as Treble And Bass.
