Biography
Nikki Hornsby, a singer-songwriter and 12-string guitarist, entered the world in California yet grew up in Virginia. She shares no connection to Bruce Hornsby, though her grandfather was the trumpet player Dan Hornsby. Music claimed her attention early; after sampling several instruments she settled on guitar. During her East Coast college years she performed regularly, eventually stepping away from studies when the two pursuits could no longer coexist. In the mid-1970s she moved back to California with her parents and began appearing steadily throughout the South Bay Area.
Recording began in the late 1980s. Her song “Shoestring and a Prayer” received airplay on numerous AM and FM stations and across Europe, resulting in her selection as Scandinavia’s Female Singer of the Year in 1988. The single also reached the Cashbox national Top 100 and landed in the Top Five of the IRC independent country chart in 1989. Another early track, “Hot Talkin’ Big Shot,” served for several years as a recurring element on one DJ’s talk program. Hornsby has additionally judged panels at various California country music competitions and holds membership in the ACM.
Under her own imprint, CJP-NH Records, she has issued numerous albums, among them Reaching Out in 2001, a set of positive country songs dedicated to her brother during his terminal illness. The 2005 compilation Previous Releases collected every track of hers that charted between 1989 and 2002. In the mid-2000s she returned to Europe for performances that drew favorable coverage for her original material. After coming back to the United States she released Just Wait in 2006, whose song “This Is America” aired during CNN’s international World Cup soccer broadcast. Three years later an instrumental edition appeared under the title Just Wait Instrumentally.
