Irish vocalist Nina Hynes passed two years of her adolescence in Northern Ireland, where she first acquired guitar skills and honed her vocal abilities. From there she relocated to France and tried out these emerging abilities by performing for passersby on the streets of Paris. Back in Ireland once more, she joined Mundy and Paddy Casey—other aspiring performers at the time—for regular appearances at singer/songwriter evenings held in the International, which led to a recording contract with the Dublin-based independent label Reverb Records. The six-song debut album Creation, issued in 1999, received positive notices throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe. In the period immediately after its release, Hynes opened for a series of visiting artists that included Stereolab, Cat Power, and David Gray, and she also joined electronic composer Harold Budd on a tour across the continent.
