Niney the Observer

Niney the Observer played a pivotal role in forging the signature reggae aesthetic that dominated the early 1970s. Born Winston Holness in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in 1951, he gained the nickname Niney after losing a thumb during a workshop accident. He broke into the business in the late sixties under the wing of producer Bunny Lee and subsequently collaborated with Lee “Scratch” Perry. After launching his own Observer imprint, Niney scored his initial success with the 1970 Dennis Alcapone release “Mr. Brown.” Later the same year he issued the landmark “Blood and Fire,” a track that moved roughly 30,000 units on the island and provoked lasting resentment from Bob Marley because of its close echoes of “Duppy Conqueror.”

His most enduring achievements arose from his alliance with singer Dennis Brown, begun in 1973; the partnership quickly generated a string of inventive hits that included “Westbound Train,” “I Am the Conqueror,” “Cassandra,” and “No More Will I Roam.” Additional sessions featured Gregory Isaacs, Horace Andy, Junior Delgado, and Delroy Wilson. Niney stepped away from recording toward the end of the seventies, reappearing in Paris around 1982. Midway through the decade he came back to Kingston for a short stint at Channel One studios. In 1988 he resumed full-time production, overseeing material by Andrew Tosh and Frankie Paul. Further work with Little John, Yami Bolo, and Baby Wayne kept his profile intact throughout the following ten years.
