Biography
Born in Germany, Gottschalk has built a reputation first and foremost as a jazz vocalist, yet he also commands guitar and trumpet with considerable skill. His instrumental collaborations have included work alongside saxophonist Peter Weniger, keyboard player Matthias Bröde, guitarist Rolf Marx, bassists Stefan Rademacher and Bernd Zinsius, and drummers Peter Baumgärtner and Wolfgang Ekholt. In addition, he has enjoyed considerable success performing and recording as a duo with guitarist Frank Haunschild, earning broad and positive notice throughout the German jazz world during the early 2000s. The pair’s repertoire merges jazz, folk, pop, and Latin elements, with Gottschalk delivering a vigorous, fluid tenor on up-tempo numbers and a more intimate delicacy on ballads. His own selections draw chiefly from the well of jazz and popular standards.
